Yuuki Ashikaga (足利 勇気 Ashikaga Yuuki) is the protagonist of Cross Days and a side character in Shiny Days.
Background[]
Yuuki lives in Aoi Town along with his older sister Chie and their parents, who are often away at work.
He went to the same middle school as Taisuke, Hikari, and Tanaka, and all of them were likely in the same class with Youji and Misao, as Hikari mentions them at her café.
At Sakakino High, Yuuki is a student librarian and works alongside Kasannoin, addressing him as sempai.
Appearance[]
Yuuki is a short and slight boy with pale brown hair and reddish-brown eyes. He appears to be slightly feminine, which is noted by other characters, such as Kasannoin or Taisuke.
His casual clothing consists of denim jeans, a light yellow short-sleeved shirt, and a light green hoodie.
Personality[]
Although polite and somewhat reserved, Yuuki is determined and honest; this is seen when he tries to help Kotonoha maintain her relationship with Makoto while at the same time trying to end Makoto's affair with Sekai.
In regard to his sister, Yuuki has a typical sibling relationship with Chie; due to being younger and relatively weaker, Yuuki is often made to be Chie's gopher, much to his resentment. However, it is clear that they otherwise have a good relationship.
While being short and slight, he has learned Martial Arts and if provoked, may use this to protect himself (or his ego). The use of Yuuki's force varies, as if he is sexually assaulted, he has no will/strength to save and free himself.
Visual Novel[]
Yuuki is seen to have a short temper, as shown when he threatens to break Makoto's teeth during the festival after the latter provokes his jealousy regarding Roka. He is also seen to take offence at references to shortness, be it his own or anyone else's, as seen every time he punches Taisuke for making fun of his or anyone else's shortness. Moreover, Yuuki takes a rather bullish or acrimonious attitude regarding women, such as getting frustrated with Kotonoha for improperly using the library's book scanner or remarking to Kasannoin that the girls of his class are all too "stupid and ugly" for him.
Manga[]
Yuuki is shown to be more self-conscious, as seen in his outburst at Roka when she teases him about his “unmanly” appearance. He is also more sensitive, as shown when he attempts suicide after Kotonoha coldly rejects his attempts at helping her.
“Yuu”[]
As mentioned above, Yuuki appears a bit feminine, which lends into his ability to cross-dress flawlessly. As “Yuu”, he wears a ginger wig, and in the visual novel, dresses up as a waitress. "Yuu" also wears a white sundress and the girls' school uniform.
His “Yuu” persona appears only in a third chapter route in the visual novel and plays a significant role in the manga.
Visual Novel[]
Yuuki becomes hostile towards Makoto and Sekai for their affair's effects on Kotonoha. For that, Yuuki plans an assault on Sekai, but is intercepted by Setsuna, who eventually blackmails him into crossdressing for class 1-3's exhibit.
Yuuki himself can end up in a relationship with Makoto while in his cross-dressing persona, as well as develop his own feelings for Makoto. However, if Yuuki doesn't become “Yuu” and instead confronts Makoto directly, he'll be able to strengthen his relationship with Roka and depending on the path taken, can help Kotonoha succeed with her love life as well.
Manga[]
Yuuki becomes “Yuu” of his own volition and does so to expose Makoto's true, predatory nature with other girls. He has no interest in a relationship with Makoto, as he finds the latter disgusting.

Yuuki likes books and MMORPGs. In the visual novel, he is also able to help set up a website.

Visual Novel[]
His story begins at the second semester in Sakakino High, running the library almost all by himself, replacing the other librarians and librarians who rarely come. Through his sister Chie, Yuuki is introduced to Roka, a member of Class 1-2 and Chie's basketball teammate. They start chatting and get along, even getting to Sweets Ohara together. Although they don't call themselves a “couple”, it's clear that their feelings are mutual. At the same time, he helps Kotonoha and gets to know her. Asking for advice from Kotonoha and Hikari, he was very eager to ask Roka out on a date, but due to multiple misunderstandings, Roka gets extremely jealous and starts to “date” Makoto. He gets to confirm that Makoto is dating Kotonoha, and tries to warn her about possible cheating.
Yuuki can try to reconcile with Roka and can end up with her or with Ai, but in the endings that involve the latter, he is clearly unhappy with this outcome. If he doesn't succeed with Roka or end up with Ai, he can be introduced to Kokoro by Kasannoin, end up in a relationship with Makoto, or become a sex slave to either Chie's friends or Taisuke and his friends.
Manga[]
Unlike in the visual novel, the manga begins in the first semester. Yuuki develops a crush on Kotonoha, and has a rough start with Roka, due to him having walked in on her while she was changing in the girls' locker room. After his sister tricks the two of them into meeting at Sweets Ohara, they get to know each other better, lessening the tension. However, due to mutual misunderstandings, as well as having seen Makoto getting handsy with Roka, Yuuki is under the impression that Roka is already dating Makoto. He then tries to approach Kotonoha, only to learn that she already has a boyfriend: Makoto, the same guy who is (presumably) dating Roka. Yuuki becomes further involved after finding out that Makoto is cheating on Kotonoha (and presumably Roka) with Sekai.
He tries to confront Makoto and Sekai, but Sekai simply tells him it's none of his business. Makoto later mocks Yuuki for his efforts, even going so far as admitting to Yuuki that he doesn't care about either Kotonoha or Sekai but likes the sex. He then tells Yuuki that if a much better-looking girl comes along, he would dump Kotonoha and Sekai both. This gives Yuuki the idea that in order to make Kotonoha see what kind of person Makoto really is, he'll have to show her how Makoto behaves with other girls, causing Yuuki to create his “Yuu” persona.
